Is Crown Lengthening a Necessary Procedure?

Posted on 11/15/2018 by Aaron Vickers
Is Crown Lengthening a Necessary Procedure? If you've had a broken or cracked tooth, we may recommend that you have a crown installed. These caps fit on top of your natural teeth and can help prevent infection and further damage. Crowns can also be purely cosmetic in some cases.

You may need a crown put on top of a tooth that has had a root canal or that has a major cavity in it. In some cases, we can't put a crown directly on top of the tooth. If there's not enough of the tooth there to hold the crown on, we may need to do a crown lengthening.

What Is Crown Lengthening?

When we do a crown lengthening, we will actually pull the gum away from your teeth and remove some of it. This makes the exposed part of the tooth longer so that there's a larger surface to connect to the crown. It's necessary if you want a crown on that tooth.

It's a Fairly Simple Procedure

While it does involve removing some of your gums, the crown lengthening procedure is actually done as an outpatient. You will receive local anesthesia, but you will be able to drive yourself home. You will want to take some time to recover, of course.

Generally, we recommend you take it easy for a few days. While most people can go back to work the next day, if you have a job that's physically demanding, you may want to take a day or two off. Physical exertion can cause you to bleed more. Overall, it will take up to three months for your gums to fully heal.

Do I Need Crown Lengthening?

In most cases, crown lengthening isn't necessary unless you have very little of the tooth left. In that case, we'll have to do a lengthening procedure if you want a crown. If you want to discuss this procedure further or know you need a crown, give us a call today. We can answer all of your questions.
