Symptoms That Accompany an Impacted Canine

Posted on 9/15/2018 by Aaron Vickers
Symptoms That Accompany an Impacted CanineEveryone has two upper canines (maxillary) and two lower canines (mandibular) that have thicker and longer roots than the other teeth. Canine roots are the longest in the human body. An impacted canine means it can not surface as it should due to several reasons such as positioning or blockage.

We usually hear of impacted wisdom teeth, but the canines are the second most common tooth to become impacted. While wisdom teeth serve no purpose and usually end up getting extracted, canines have an essential role in your oral health and need to be treated to prevent the development of serious issues.

Why an Impacted Canine Need to Be Treated

It is crucial to treat an impacted canine because these teeth are the last to erupt around age 13, and they help fill gaps that help align the rest of the teeth. They can also affect the look of a smile. Canines are also critical to the bite. They are the ones that first touch the bottom teeth when you close your mouth. Finally, canines affect the alignment of the rest of the teeth and help them get into the correct position.

Symptoms of an Impacted Canine

An impacted canine can develop because of overcrowding which prevents the tooth from erupting in the correct position fully. Sometimes there are no symptoms that come with an impacted canine, but an X-ray can detect the condition.

Other times there are some symptoms that could be present with an impacted canine including:

•  Pain when chewing or biting
•  Bad breath
•  Swollen gums
•  Difficulty opening your mouth

Because problems with an impacted canine occur when the patient is in the early teen years, monitoring the condition with regular examinations and X-rays is the first course of action. Since canines are critical to having a proper bite and teeth alignment, we can recommend the best option once the teeth begin to erupt.
